Esthète et mécène, Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992) est surtout connue pour son oeuvre de décoratrice : celle qui "faisait des maisons comme d'autres font des poèmes" accueillait dans sa boutique, rue Jacob, André Malraux, Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Sagan ou Coco Chanel. Mais bien avant de donner son nom au bleu Castaing et d'aménager la maison de Jean Cocteau à Milly-la-Forêt, elle côtoya la bohême de Montparnasse et lança le peintre Chaïm Soutine. Personnalité turbulente, elle inspira le personnage de Julietta à Louise de Vilmorin, eut pour amis Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, Blaise Cendras ou Violette Leduc, et, au cours des vingt-cinq dernières années de sa très longue vie, fut une Maud qui collectionna les jeunes Harold.(Note de l'éditeur)
Aesthete and patron of the arts, Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992) is best known for her work as a decorator: the woman who ‘made houses like others make poems’ welcomed André Malraux, Brigitte Bardot, Françoise Sagan and Coco Chanel to her boutique on rue Jacob. But long before giving her name to Castaing blue and fitting out Jean Cocteau's house in Milly-la-Forêt, she rubbed shoulders with the bohemian crowd of Montparnasse and introduced the painter Chaïm Soutine to the world. A turbulent personality, she inspired Louise de Vilmorin to create the character of Julietta, befriended Erik Satie, Pablo Picasso, Blaise Cendras and Violette Leduc and, during the last twenty-five years of her very long life, was a Maud who collected young Harold boys.(Editor's note) |
