L'art symboliste, qui s'épanouit en Europe de 1870 à 1910, reflète le profond mouvement des mentalités de deux générations. Cette période est symbolisée par des relations étroites entre artistes, hommes de lettres, philosophes et musiciens qui rejetaient la civilisation industrielle et le rationalisme pour quérir ailleurs imagination et rêve. Partant des préraphaélites anglais et des artistes français qui assurent la jonction entre le romantisme et le symbolisme, l'ouvrage examine ensuite l'apport de Gauguin à la diffusion symbolisme qui fut illustré par les Nabis, par les peintres qui exposèrent aux Salons Rose Croix et par de nombreux artistes ailleurs en Europe.
Symbolist art, which flourished in Europe from 1870 to 1910, reflects the profound change in mentality of two generations. This period is symbolised by the close relations between artists, men of letters, philosophers and musicians who rejected industrial civilisation and rationalism in search of imagination and dreams elsewhere. Starting with the English Pre-Raphaelites and the French artists who provided the link between Romanticism and Symbolism, the book goes on to examine Gauguin's contribution to the spread of Symbolism, which was illustrated by the Nabis, by the painters who exhibited at the Salons Rose Croix and by many artists. |
