L’ouvrage retrace la carrière de cet enfant d’un district populaire de l’ancien Tokyo qui s’appelait alors Edo, et l’atmosphère si particulière de cette grande ville et de la vie japonaise quand le Japon, fermé aux étrangers, développait en vase clos une culture puissamment originale. Devenu l’un des grands maîtres de l’estampe, le « fou de dessin » comme il s’appelait lui-même, a été redécouvert par les Impressionnistes et par les esthètes de la fin du XIXe siècle. Il est resté depuis l’une des plus grandes et, par sa personnalité, l’une des plus attachantes figures de l’art universel.
The book retraces the career of this child from a working-class district of ancient Tokyo, then called Edo, and the very special atmosphere of this great city and of Japanese life when Japan, closed to foreigners, was developing a powerfully original culture in isolation. Having become one of the great masters of printmaking, the ‘drawing madman’, as he called himself, was rediscovered by the Impressionists and the aesthetes of the late 19th century. Since then, he has remained one of the greatest and, by virtue of his personality, one of the most endearing figures in universal art. |
