| Résumé : | This thesis investigates to what extent the ballroom community has influenced the visual and performative codes of fashion runway shows since the 1990s. Using a dual-qualitative methodology, with a semiotic analysis of five womenswear shows (Versace SS95, McQueen FW97, Gaultier FW02, Owens FW12, Mugler FW22) and qualitative interviews with ballroom members in Paris and Cape Town, this research identifies key borrowings such as gender performance, voguing-inspired gestures, and audience interaction. The findings reveal both aesthetic references and deeper structural parallels, and at the same time highlights tensions around visibility, recognition, and cultural authorship. Finally, it offers insights into the evolving relationship between fashion institutions and a historically marginalized creative community. |
