(Note de l'éditeur) Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition "Silhouette. Le corps mis en forme", which was held at the Historical Museum of Lausanne from 12 April to 29 September 2019. From its origins, clothing has been a protection, an ornament and a sign of social identity. With the rise of luxury in the Middle Ages, and then of fashion in the 17th century, it took on a new role: sculpting the silhouette. Increasing or reducing the hips, refining and lengthening the legs, varying the height and circumference of the waist, shaping the chest: clothing becomes the site of an ever-renewed invention of the body. It modifies the perception of the body in a thousand ways, the details of which are like an inventory of incredibly creative and deliciously complicated shapes. Through five chapters and a series of focuses on twenty-four pieces of men's and women's wardrobes, the book offers an exploration of the metamorphoses of the silhouette from the 17th century to the present day. Through an approach combining history, art history and sociology, it highlights the contexts and circumstances of these evolutions, confronting the situation in Lausanne with those of other places in Switzerland and Europe.
