The year is 1977. At the age of nineteen, Francesca Woodman was in Rome for a study trip. Daughter of art, student at the Rhode Island School of Design, for her Rome represents that place and that moment in which the aesthetic and stylistic suggestions cultivated in America reach their definitive maturity. Through the study of images, private correspondence and scattered notes that Francesca Woodman left to her Roman friends, as well as through the testimonies of those who shared this creative period with her, Isabella Pedicini composes a previously unpublished portrait, taking the reader on an intimate journey where words and images intertwine to draw the contours of the great photographer's original universe. In the work of Francesca Woodman we find echoes and suggestions of surrealism, the use of the body as a language, the influences of Breton's texts combined with those of American photography. Francesca Woodman transforms herself, and to do so she uses the two instruments that enable her magical play: the body and the camera. Thus we come to identify the topos of metamorphosis at the heart of her work. |
