Résumé : | Approaching fashion as a history of extending the body beyond the organic with social and physical technologies alike, this essay identifies dandyism as a collection of so-called "fashion practices" that make specific uses of artifice as a critical construction. Rooted in analysis of Against the Grain by Joris-Karl Huysmans, the essay suggests that the dandy approaches the schizophrenic state of the "Body without Organs" imagined by Deleuze and Guattari through a hypochondriac relationship to social and cultural production. Artifice is explored as a trinity of three major functions mitigating this hypochondria and organizing the dandy's bodily relationship to the external and the organic. Following this analysis, a contemporary case study of Karl Lagerfeld is given in order to establish a vision of how the specific body technologies outlined remain at once a central and exceptional part of today's fashion system. |
